May 10, 2022

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) visited Seoul to invite delegates to the IUFRO World Congress 2024: Forests and Society Towards 2050.

The world met up to discuss the role of forests as part of the solution to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

In the beginning of May SLU and IUFRO attended the XV World Forestry Congress (WFC) in Seoul, to join the global discussions of how to build a sustainable, healthy and resilient future with forests.

Many congress delegates stopped by the joint SLU and IUFRO booth, interested to discuss more on the congress topics. The week gave the opportunity to meet different stakeholder groups from all over the world, curious to learn more about IUFRO, SLU and the upcoming IUFRO World Congress 2024 in Stockholm. We were pleased to host the Swedish ambassador delegation including global delegates and guests – media covered by Al Jazeera news, the International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA), students and scientists from a range of Universities around the world and our Nordic-Baltic congress partner country representatives.

The forestry community gathered in Seoul to share and discuss the state and future of world forestry. High-level dialogues, knowledge exchange, keynotes and panel sessions in parallel with many fruitful meetings, framed the congress week. Delegates from over 140 countries, representing governments and public agencies, international organizations, the private sector, academic and research institutions, non-governmental organizations and indigenous organizations met up at the XV WFC, arranged by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The message was clear – emphasising the role of sustainable managed forests to be an integral part of building sustainable solutions to meet the challenges the world currently faces. Pointing out the sense of urgency to accelerate action, strengthen partnerships and enhance cross-sectoral collaboration. Read the full Summary report 2–6 May 2022 (iisd.org).
